by Francois Martin Hunter, Counsellor and LGBTQ+ Affirmative Practitioner

In therapy, I often sit with clients who carry the weight of rejection, silence, or conditional love from their families of origin. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, “family” is not always a source of safety. But healing often comes from somewhere else — through chosen family.
What Is Chosen Family?
Chosen family are the people we intentionally surround ourselves with — those who offer love, support, and a sense of belonging. For LGBTQ+ individuals, these connections are often lifelines formed out of necessity, not tradition.
They may include:
-
Friends who become siblings
-
Mentors who feel like parents
-
Partners, housemates, or community members who see you fully
Why Does Chosen Family Form?
Some of the most common reasons include:
-
Estrangement or lack of acceptance from biological family
-
Cultural or religious tensions
-
Emotional unsafety at home
-
Seeking others with shared lived experience
-
Longing for authentic, reciprocal support
These families are born not just out of want — but out of deep, unmet needs.
Mental Health Benefits
From a counselling perspective, chosen families can:
-
Provide consistent emotional validation
-
Reduce shame and isolation
-
Offer secure attachments and boundaries
-
Help rewrite early narratives of unworthiness
-
Act as a buffer against depression, anxiety, and crisis
They don’t erase the grief of what was missing — but they offer hope and connection in its place.
Holding Space for Grief and Gratitude
In therapy, I often help clients navigate the tension between mourning their family of origin and embracing the love they’ve built around them. Both truths can coexist.
As a counsellor, I honour the strength it takes to build support from the ground up.
Final Reflections
If you’ve found your chosen family, take a moment to honour them. If you’re still searching, know you are worthy of love, community, and safety — exactly as you are.
In a world that sometimes fails to offer us belonging, chosen family reminds us we can create it for ourselves.
Looking for an LGBTQ+ affirmative counsellor? I’d be honoured to hold space for your story — and support you in whatever family you choose.
